arilyn is primarily a plein air painter. When
his is not possible, she works from her own photos as a point of departure. The area she lives in and things around her are her inspiration. Some of her favorites are Acampo landscapes, old tractors and cars, curious cattle, and the flowers from her garden. She is also drawn to reflected color in all kinds of items, especially bottles. She has a deep passion for vibrant color.
Her medium of choice is oil, pastel and acrylics in that order. She feels like a sculptor when painting because she can chisel out the images as though they were stone.
Offett A F B, Nebraska was where she came into the world on January 2, 1953. Since she was a military brat and her mother was ill, she lived in the Masonic Children’s Home in St. Louis, Missouri for four years, from the age of 7 through 11, where she spent hours doing botanical illustrations for her school reports. When her parents saw these illustrations, they encouraged her to become an artist by enrolling her

in art courses and by creating a studio in the back of their antique shop where she would spend hours painting. Antique relics reoccur in her work in the form of old, rusty cars and tractors, as well as antique lanterns and jars.
Throughout her life she has continued to value a strong art education and will never stop learning. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1987 from California State University, Stanislaus. In 1990, she received her teaching credentials from Chapman College enabling her to instruct future artists at Bear Creek High School, where she taught many levels of art. She earned her M.F.A.in Painting from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA.
Her husband, Jerry, converted the barn into her art studio, which has been a gathering place for creative friends. Marilyn now teaches a few classes at the Lodi Community Art Center. She believes art and the creative process are a force of consistency in her life. Her work allows her to endure life’s difficulties. She considers herself a survivor, a survivor not just of cancer, but of life. She lives in Clements, California with her husband Jerry and her three dogs, Cookie, Shadow & Chocolate.
