UPCOMING FEATURED ARTISTS

2023 NOVEMBER FEATURED ARTIST: SYLVIA CHAVEZ

Sylvia Chavez joined the Lodi Community Art Center in 2019 when she signed up for a watercolor class in our studio, and hasn’t stopped painting since. Though she paints mostly in watercolor, she has begun exploring oils. Sylvia most often paints what is around her. It can be a dogwood tree in bloom or an interesting brick building along her walking route; a street scene or a landscape she comes across while on vacation, and you will sometimes find a church in those street scenes. Sylvia also enjoys painting portraits of people and pets around her. She admits she is still searching for her painting style, but is enjoying every bit of the process.

2023 MARCH FEATURED ARTIST: SUSIE HOFFMAN

Susie’s art will be on display throughout the month of March.

Opening Reception:

March 4, 1 PM - 3 PM

After retiring from teaching sixth grade, Susie began her adventure in art.  She started in watercolor, but has branched into work in most all media.  She and her husband, Larry, created an art center in Copperopolis where she has organized and enjoyed classes by many excellent foothill artists over the last decade.  From pastels to oils, she is always eager to try something new.

Susie presents a variety and a plethora of paintings, ranging from portraits to local landscapes.  She is constantly working toward making art that is loose and unrestricted.  “Often your best paintings are the ones you spend the least amount of time on because they are fresh and painterly.”

Taking great pleasure in painting with others, Susie teaches beginning oil and watercolor, and offers drop-in days to fellow artists at her home studio.  She has also organized group trips to beautiful places—from oil painting in France to watercolor in Ireland and pastels in Croatia.

Susie has received numerous top awards in shows throughout Northern California, including Best of Show at the 2019 Motherlode Art Association Show.  She has judged several shows, most recently the 2021&22 Amador County Fair and Delicato Vineyard Show 2023.  Her work has been published in several books, covers of art show programs and TV guides, and local newspapers.

You may see Susie’s artwork displayed at Sutter Creek Gallery in Sutter Creek, Art on Main in Murphys, Galerie Copper in Copperopolis Town Square, The Gateway Hotel, Copperopolis Library, Dr. Peter Uyeyama’s office,  Mi Pueblo Restaurant, Copper Nails, and Gateway Adventure Store in Copperopolis; Calaveras Business Bureau in Angels Camp and Murphys; Lodi Community Art Center; KVIE annual auctions and Town Hall Arts’ website—www.townhallarts.com and at her online shop:  www.etsy.com/shop/ateliersusie.

2023 FEBRUARY FEATURED ARTIST: TONY SEGALE

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Tony Segale’s artistic endeavors started in childhood, doodling ideas and images both fitting and unsuitable, and cartooning for the school newspaper. Primarily self taught, he began hand lettering signs and pictorials as a side gig during his first career in the retail meat trade. Switching to a new endeavor as a full time commercial artist, Tony specializes in reverse glass gold leaf and large format murals, with watercolors being utilized in the creation of maquettes and design. Soon, he found himself expressing his own observations with a twist of what ought to be.

Tony considers himself an abstract realism painter, original interpretations created in his graphic bravado style. "Every creative action risks failure. If the risks are little, the reward is little."

Tony likes to paint plein air, or work from sketches on location then re-imagined in the studio. He teaches workshops in the study of watercolor, drawing, brush lettering and reverse glass gold leaf.
